Baptism is a sacrament of the Church that marks the beginning of a journey of faith. Through water and the Holy Spirit, it celebrates new life in Christ — a welcome into God’s family and into the life of the Church.
You don’t need to be a regular churchgoer
In the Church of England, baptism is open to people of all ages — from newborns to adults. It is not simply a tradition or a naming ceremony; it is a real and joyful act of faith, carried out in community. Many of the families and adults we welcome are at the very beginning of their journey with the Church, and we meet you wherever you are.

Adult Baptism
Many adults choose to be baptised as they explore or deepen their Christian faith — perhaps for the first time, or after years away from church. If you’re wondering whether baptism is right for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. There are no awkward questions, and no pressure — just a gentle, welcoming preparation programme at your own pace.

A personal welcome
You’ll be welcomed warmly, whether you attend regularly or are exploring for the very first time. There’s no expectation to have it all figured out.
Godparents
If it’s a child being baptised, we’ll help you understand the important and joyful role godparents play in your child’s life, and who might take it on.
A preparation meeting
We invite all families and adults to a friendly meeting before the service to talk everything through — what to expect, what’s involved, and any questions you still have.
The service
Whether within a Sunday service or as a standalone celebration, the service itself takes around 45 minutes to an hour — a joyful moment shared with family, friends and your church community.
Common questions
Does my child need to be baptised to attend church or a church school?
No — everyone is welcome at our services. However, baptism can be relevant to applications for some Church of England schools. We’re happy to discuss this with you when you get in touch.
Do I need to be a regular churchgoer?
Not at all. Many families and individuals who come to us for baptism are at the very start of their journey with the Church. We welcome you wherever you are in your faith.
How long does a baptism service take?
A baptism service is usually around 45 minutes to an hour. It can take place within a Sunday service or as a standalone celebration — we’ll discuss what feels right for you.
Is there a charge for baptism?
No. Baptism in the Church of England is free of charge. There is no fee for the sacrament itself.
